Overview
Zone Nine: Nihilation is Soliz Interactive's internal flagship project, developed with Unreal Engine 5. As the world's first true Zombie Survival Esports experience, Zone Nine is engineered to redefine competitive survival gameplay. The project is built on two core pillars: pioneering a new esports genre and deploying revolutionary AI to create intelligent, unpredictable zombie threats that elevate the entire PvPvE experience. This game is the ultimate demonstration of our capabilities in creating engaging competitive titles powered by cutting-edge technology.
APPROACH
The concept for Zone Nine originated from a desire to merge the tension of survival horror with the strategic depth of competitive esports. Drawing thematic inspiration from the successful light novel "Heaven No. 9," our team focused on creating a truly innovative core experience. The vision is a strategic, team-based competition where players must battle not only each other but also hyper-intelligent AI adversaries within a dynamic, unpredictable world. Unreal Engine 5 was chosen for its unparalleled power and native support for AI and replication to realize this ambitious design.

HLOd + World partition workflow for map optimization:

  • Our map optimization workflow combines Unreal Engine 5's World Partition with Hierarchical Level of Detail (HLODs).
  • World Partition dynamically streams map cells based on player proximity, while HLODs render distant cells as a single, low-polygon mesh instead of numerous individual assets. This combined approach significantly reduces draw calls and memory usage, allowing us to build a large-scale world that maintains the high, stable framerate required for a competitive esports environment.

Dynamic Lighting:

  • The game’s fully dynamic lighting system creates a realistic and tense atmosphere by reacting in real-time to the day/night cycle and shifting weather conditions.
  • This directly impacts gameplay, as shifting shadows can alter sightlines and a flash of lightning during a storm can momentarily reveal an enemy's position. Light and shadow thus become core tactical elements that players must adapt to for survival.

Gameplay Development & Systems:

  • Real-World Dynamics Simulation: Instead of a static environment, Zone Nine features a complex simulation system that is a core element of survival. This system governs a full day/night cycle and a range of weather conditions, each with direct gameplay consequences. For instance, zombies become significantly more numerous and dangerous after dark. Thick fog severely limits visibility for all players, while rainstorms might slow the rate of dehydration but increase the rate of hunger, forcing teams to constantly re-evaluate their survival priorities.
  • Gameplay Ability System (GAS): We leveraged Unreal Engine's powerful Gameplay Ability System (GAS), a framework utilized by blockbuster titles like Fortnite and Marvel Rivals. This allows us to build a highly modular and scalable framework for every action in the game, which is critical for balancing and expanding a live-service eSport.

Programming and Technical Development:

  • Revolutionary Zombie AI: The game features groundbreaking AI applied exclusively to the zombie hordes. The goal is to create ultra-responsive, near-sentient zombie entities that blur the lines between predictable NPCs and intelligent adversaries.
  • Strategic & Coordinated Threats: Our core Director-Agent AI Framework is used to power the zombie hordes, enabling complex, emergent behaviors. Instead of attacking mindlessly, zombies can exhibit coordinated tactics—such as specific types working together to break player formations, flanking, and reacting strategically to player actions. This makes the "Environment" in PvPvE a truly thinking and unpredictable threat.
Result & Future Outlook

The development of Zone Nine: Nihilation has achieved significant milestones and is progressing steadily towards its public release.

  • Early Validation and Community Growth: The project's potential was recognized early with angel investment from Kyros Ventures and Ancient8 in 2023. The initial closed alpha test was met with immense interest, generating over 1,000 applications, from which 250 dedicated testers were selected. The feedback from these participants on the core gameplay was overwhelmingly positive.
  • Public Showcase and Feedback: The version showcased at Super Vietnam 2025 was a major success, allowing over 350 players to experience the game firsthand at the Soliz Interactive booth. This provided a significant volume of valuable feedback that is now directly informing refinements for the upcoming Open Alpha test, scheduled for release at the end of Q2/2025.

Our ongoing goal for Zone Nine: Nihilation is to deliver a polished and innovative title that officially defines the zombie-survival eSport genre. This project stands as a testament to Soliz Interactive's technical proficiency with Unreal Engine 5 and our dedication to creating the next generation of engaging competitive experiences.
